Which file system to choose

Sometimes, reading information, playing music and movies on USB stick or external hard disk on all devices, namely: computer, DVD player or TV, Xbox or PS3, as well as audio system can cause some problems. In this article we will analyze which file system to use, to always see the USB stick.

What is file system and what problems could they have

File system – a way of organizing data on a storage environment. As a rule, each operating system uses its own file system, but it can use some. Considering that only binary data can be written on hard disks, the file system represents a key component, which offers the transfer of physical data into files, which can be read by bone. Thus, formatting the storage unit in a certain way and with a certain file system, you decide what devices (even the audio system in the car has a kind of operating system) will be able to understand, what is written on USB stick, hard disk or other storage unit.

In addition to the well -known FAT32 and NTFS, as well as less known, such as HFS+ and EXT, there are dozens of file systems, created for different devices for certain purposes. Nowadays, when most users have more than one computer in the house and other digital devices, on which Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Android and others can be used, the question about, how to format the USB or another portable unit, so that it is read on all devices, is quite current.

Compatibility

Currently, there are two widespread file systems (in Romania) – it is NTFS (Windows) and FAT32 (old Windows). Mac OS and Linux file systems can also be used.

Logically it would be to assume that modern operating systems will work with file systems for each bone, only that in most cases it is not. Mac OS X cannot write disc data, formatted in NTFS. Windows 7 does not see HFS+ and EXT discs and either ignores them, or says the disc is not formatted.

Many Linux distributions, for example, Ubuntu default most file systems. Copying from one system to another is a normal process for Linux. Most distributions support HFS+ and NTFS or the support are installed with a free component.

In addition, game consoles, such as Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 offer limited access to certain file systems, and only allow reading from USB storage units. To find out what file systems and devices are supported, see this table:

It should be noted that in the table are shown the possibilities of OS in working with imposing file systems. In Mac OS, as well as in Windows you can download additional software, which will allow you to work with unbearable formats.

FAT32 – old format, and due to this fact, almost all operating devices and systems have support for it. Thus, if you form the USB stick in FAT32 format, it should be read anywhere. However, with this format there is a problem: limiting the size of a file and a separate volume. If you are going to store, read and write big files, FAT32 may not fit. And now more detailed about size restrictions.

File size restrictions in file systems

The FAT32 file system has been developed long ago and is based on the previous FAT versions, initially used in the DOS operating system. Discs with today’s volume at that time did not exist, which is why they had no support for files greater than 4 GB. Currently many users are experiencing problems because of this. Below you can see the comparison of file systems by supported dimensions of files and partitions:

Each new system exceeds FAT32 according to the size of the individual files and the separate partition on the disc. Thus, FAT32 cannot be used for some purposes. A problem resolution – the use of the exfam file system, has support in many operating systems. However, for a regular USB stick, if no more than 4 GB files are kept, FAT32 will be the best choice, and the stick will be read almost anywhere.

Conclusion

Choosing the right file system for your USB stick or external hard drive is essential to ensure compatibility across various devices, including computers, TVs, gaming consoles, and audio systems. Each device has its own limitations, and understanding these can save you a great deal of frustration when transferring or accessing your data.

File systems like FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS each serve different purposes. FAT32 remains the most widely compatible format, working seamlessly with most computers, smart TVs, and gaming consoles. However, its biggest limitation is the 4 GB maximum file size, which can be problematic for users who wish to store large files such as HD movies or extensive backups. On the other hand, NTFS supports larger files and offers improved performance and security features, but it is often not recognized by older devices or some media players. The exFAT format serves as a middle ground — it supports large files like NTFS while maintaining broad compatibility similar to FAT32, making it ideal for modern devices.

Ultimately, the best file system depends on how and where you plan to use your USB stick. For users who prioritize compatibility with multiple devices, FAT32 or exFAT are the most reliable choices. However, if the primary purpose is to store and transfer large files between computers, NTFS might be the better option.

In conclusion, understanding file systems and their limitations helps ensure smooth communication between your storage device and the equipment you use daily. By selecting the right format based on your needs, you can avoid common issues such as unreadable drives or file transfer errors, ensuring your data is always accessible whenever and wherever you need it.
