How to check the temperature from the video card

The video card is one of the most important energy consumers in the computer. For this reason it is very hot, especially under large loads. In this article I will show you how we can check the temperature of the video card.

The first thing to do to check the temperature of the video card, is to install a special program. There are different programs for monitoring the temperature of the video card. Let’s analyze the most important.

GPU-Z

The GPU program aims to obtain information about the video card. With the help of this program we can find out the model of the video card, the characteristics, the current temperature, as well as other information. The GP-Z program is free, and can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website.

After starting the GPU-Z program you will see three tabs: Graphics Card, Sensors and Validation. To see the temperature and other information about the video card we must access the Sensors tab.

Apart from the temperature, in this tab we can find the frequency of GPU, the speed of rotation of the cooler, the amount of memory used and the current voltage.

HWMonitor

Hwmonitor is a program, specially created to monitor the temperature of the components. With this program we can check the temperature not only the video card, but also to other computer components. The Hwmonitor program is free and can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. After running the program we must find in the list of video card components.

It should be noted that Hwmonitor displays three temperatures: current temperature, minimum temperature and maximum temperature.

HWinfo

Hwinfo – another free program for obtaining information about computer features. With this program we can check the temperature of the video card and other components. To do this we have to start the program and press the «Sensors» button.

Then the indicator will appear in the system bar, with which we can check the temperature at any time.

Conclusion

The video card (GPU) is one of the most critical components in a computer, responsible for rendering graphics and handling visually intensive tasks. Due to its high energy consumption, especially during gaming or professional graphic work, the GPU tends to generate a significant amount of heat. Monitoring its temperature is essential to ensure stable performance, longevity of the hardware, and overall system reliability. Overheating can cause crashes, reduced performance, or even permanent damage to the video card and other components.

To effectively monitor GPU temperature, users need to install specialized temperature monitoring software. There are various programs available that provide real-time data on the GPU’s thermal state, fan speed, and load. Some of the most popular options include tools like HWMonitor, MSI Afterburner, and GPU-Z. These applications allow users to track temperature fluctuations under different workloads, set alerts for high temperatures, and even adjust fan speeds to maintain optimal cooling.

Regular monitoring of the GPU helps prevent overheating by giving early warnings of excessive temperatures. Additionally, it allows users to identify whether high temperatures are caused by inadequate cooling, dust accumulation, overclocking, or hardware malfunction. By taking proactive steps such as cleaning the cooling system, improving airflow, or using higher-quality thermal paste, users can maintain their video card within safe operating temperatures.

In conclusion, checking and monitoring the temperature of the video card is a crucial aspect of maintaining a computer’s performance and durability. Installing and using reliable monitoring programs allows users to prevent overheating, optimize cooling, and ensure that the GPU operates efficiently under heavy workloads. By staying vigilant about GPU temperatures, users protect their investment and maintain a stable, high-performing system for gaming, professional work, or everyday use.
