Part 3-Configuration of DNS/WINS and DHCP Server userings, client settings + lifts clients in the domain
After the successful installation of the W2K3 server and the update to the domain controller, we are now setting the DNS/Wins and DHCP service. So we lift customers in the domain.
After the doctorate for the DC has had a positive outcome, it is now the time to configure the server so that the clients have easily access: the three most important services are DNS (Services of the domain name), Windows Name Services) and DHCP (configuration of the dynamic host protocol).
But first of all, complete our installation, then enter the server cd on the unit and use Start => Control Panel => software => Add or remove the components => network services.

|
Install DHCP and wins |
Just place the hooks in front of the service name and then install the installation with OK.
Subsequently, we must rework a little with the server TCP/IP settings, that is, add the DNS server first and enter here the IP address of our server.

|
Regulate the TCP/IP settings on the server |
Then click «Advanced», also enter the server IP address on the Wins tab and turn on «Activate Netbios via TCP/IP».

It is therefore ensured that the resolution of the name later works without problems both DNS and Netbios. In theory, the XP-CLIENTI and Windows 2003 servers would also be able to communicate exclusively by means of the DNS, but at the latest when a print server is integrated, this would involve problems, since they usually dominate only Netbios.
Confirm the settings with OK, so that the server TCP/IP configuration is performed as much as possible. Please restart before it goes on.
The next step is to check and regret the earnings of the DNS server: the doctorate for the DC, the correct research area was created for our domain, but we must create the reverse research area ourselves. To do this, we open the console of the DNS server through start => dns, which should be like this:
![]() |
|
Set of reverse search area |
As is easy to see, the reverse search area for our domain is missing, so we complete it by clicking with the right mouse button on «Inverse research areas» and selection of «new area» from the context menu. This begins the assistant to add DNS areas.
![]() |
|
Add the DNS area |
We create an integrated primary area of Active Directory which should be available on all domain controllers of our domain (i.e. they would automatically replicate).
![]() |
|
Add the DNS area |
In the next step, network detection must be provided. ATTENTION: Even if it is an reverse research area, network detection must be inserted forward and not, as often happens, to be read. So the illustration is correct!
![]() |
|
Add the DNS area |
After clicking on «Next» we choose «to allow only safe dynamic updates». This means that DNS voices can be changed dynamically, but only from computers belonging to the domain.
![]() |
|
Add the DNS area |
The reverse research area for our domain is thus created. Now a pointer (PTR) item must be set for our server and click with the right mouse button on the newly created area and from the context menu «New tip (PTR)».
![]() |
|
Specify the pointer |
This means that the local DNS resolution is set until, now the server has yet to be configured for the forwarding of the DNS requests, which cannot dissolve on its own. If customers want to surf/send/send and -mail later.
To do this, click with the right mouse button on the server name in the DNS Servarconsole and select «Properties» from the context menu, go to the «Forward» tab in the dialog box and insert the DNS server there, to which the requests must be forwarded.
![]() |
|
Set the server for submitting DNS requests |
I entered the IP address of a DNS Telekom server here, at best it is necessary to insert the server of your provider's names (which you can find on the router administration surface or via IPconfig /all if you use a DFü connection).
This completes the configuration of the DNS server, now we are checking the Wins server for functionality: start => administration => wins.
In the WINS server console, click on the plus sign, expand the tree and then click with the right mouse button on «active recordings».

|
Suitable the victories |
From the context menu «View data records …» and in the «Show Voices» dialog box, set the checkout for «Filter after the items with this model named». To check the function: enter the first three or four letters of the server name and click «Start».

|
Wins the test |
The result should appear like this:
![]() |
|
Suitable the victories |
The WINS server function test has already finished and further settings are needed for our purposes.
If we now contact the configuration of the DHCP server: this is responsible for ensuring that each client receives a TCP/IP configuration suitable for the server. The IP address of the voices, the DNS server, the server and the gateway are important for the United States, there is nothing more for our small network. IMPORTANT: Other DHCP servers, since they are usually implemented in the routers, they must be off!
Let's start the Console of the DHCP server via Start => Administration => DHCP and expand the structure by clicking on the sign more. The server is still marked with a red arrow because it is not yet authorized. We modify this by clicking with the right button on the server name and the selection of «authorization» from the context menu.

|
DHCP rule |
After a short waiting period (or repeated pressure of [F5] Or «update») skips the display and the server is now equipped with a green arrow, that is, it is authorized to start in our domain.

|
DHCP rule |
First of all, we must now define an IP area from which customers later receive their addresses. Choose this area carefully, not too large and not too small, can no longer be changed later; The number of IP addresses should then pay approximately to the number of clients in the network.
To set an area to the right, click on the server name and select the contextual menu of the «new area».

|
DHCP rule |
I only chose ten addresses in my test environment.
![]() |
|
Specifies the IP of the DHCP |
After clicking on «Next», the dialogue appears for exclusions, that is, it is possible to exclude IP addresses from the newly created area, for example if one of the IP addresses from the area is fixed.
![]() |
|
Exclude the areas |
I have not defined exclusions because this is not important for me. Microsoft's recommendation also goes to work with exclusions with exclusions in which exclusions must not be defined.
The next dialogue concerns the duration of the leasing for the settings assigned by the DHCP server. This is in the default setting for 8 days and can be left for our purposes.
![]() |
|
Define the validity |
Now we get to the interesting settings, to the DHCP-YES options, we would like to configure them.
![]() |
|
Set DHCP options |
It starts with the voice for the router (Gateway Standard); Here enter the IP address of your router.
![]() |
|
Specify Gateway |
Subsequently, the DNS server is displayed: a «servants», the completely qualified domain name (FQDN) of the server (ie the name of the server.domain.tld -See fig.) And click on «Dissolve» -The should deliver the IP address of the server following, which we then assume.
![]() |
|
Domain and DNS |
After the DNS it is the turn of the Wins server, it works in a similar way here. In «serving» the Netbios name of the server is inserted and click on, which returns the IP address of the server that we take over.
![]() |
|
Wins |
This makes all the settings relevant for us, the DHCP server is initially functional. Click the left tree on the «Area Options» item to check the settings just made.
![]() |
|
Check DHCP |
Now we can raise the first client in the domain. I suppose that XP customers here, but Win2000 works almost analogously.
The clients must be configured for the use of DHCP, that is, in the TCP/IP properties they must be «automatically obtained» and «obtain the address of the DNS server».
Of course, clients also work with static IP addresses within the domain, but we should not have configured the DHCP server. 😉
Then connect a client with the switch/hub, on which the server also stops and starts. After local-still registration, you can check whether the DHCP server does its work: once on the server itself in the DHCP server console and once used IPconfig /all directly on the client. In addition to the right IP address, it is important that the IP address of the DC is inserted as a primary DNS server.
Here's how it seems with me:
![]() |
|
Cmd: ipconfig /all |
If the settings are correct, proceed on the client as follows:
Start => Control Control => System => Change «Computer name» card =>
In «Member of» Activate your «domain» and then enter the name of your domain, as a Netbios name in the Mydomain form or as FQDN in the MyDomain.ocal form
![]() |
|
Place the client in the domain |
Now you have to specify a user able to lift the computer in the domain, select the domain administrator here.
![]() |
|
Place the client in the domain |
I confirm it with OK, so you will receive the note «Welcome to the Domainname domain». After confirmation of all dialogues with OK, the restart due must be performed before.
Note: never change computers and belonging to domain in a passage, which inevitably leads to problems because Windows records only the client in the domain with its old name and then renamed it. This leads to the fact that no domain registration is possible after restarting, as there is no suitable computer account. Then please rename a client in the domain before lifting or subsequently, both are separated.
After the restart, click in the registration dialog box [STRG]+[ALT]+[ENTF] Click «Options» at the bottom right: a third field is now displayed in the «Register» access dialog box.
In this case, we perform the first registration of the domain with the administrator account, since we have not yet created users. Then enter as administrator of username, the corresponding password and select the domain name when «recorded» (which appears here only in Netbios format).
![]() |
|
Registration in the domain |
This client is now a member of your domain, which you can obviously also check: start the MMC-Snapin «User and computer Active Directory» (Start => Administration), extend the domain tree and look in the «computer» container- here you can find the customer's computer account, which has been automatically created when lifting in the domain.
![]() |
|
Examination on the fact that customers are in the announcement |
If you start the Console of the DNS server via Start => Administration => DNS and check the areas for your domain, you will also find a new item with the host name of your client. The client automatically updates these DNS items if the client is now renamed, is automatically recorded in DNS after restarting with the new name.

DNS examination |
This completes part 3 of the article. Part 4 therefore describes the creation of users, assignment of authorizations, DHCP reservations, profiles stored by the server, etc.
