If you have decided to update the BIOS version on your computer or laptop, for the beginning you should find out which version of BIOS is installed at this time, and after going to the manufacturer’s website, to see, if a new version is available (whether you have an old or new motherboard with UEFI).
It should be noted that the procedure for updating the BIOS is not safe, so if everything works well, and you have no reasons for updating, better to leave everything as it is. However, in some cases this need appears-I personally managed to get rid of the noise of the cooler only by updating BIOS, other methods did not help me. For some old motherboards, the update allows the unlocking of features, such as virtualization support.
The simplest way to find out the version of bios
One of the simplest methods – to enter the bios and see the version there (see: how I get into the bios), however, you can do it easily from Windows, there are three different methods:
- See the BIOS version in the register (Windows 7 and Windows
- Use a program to view information about your computer
- With the help line
What is the most suitable method for you – you decide, I will only describe the three methods.
Find the BIOS version of the register (Windows Registry Editor)
Start the registry editor, for this you can press the Windows + R buttons on the keyboard and introduce regedit In Caseta de Dialog «Run».
In the register editor opens the section HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEHARDWAREDESCRIPTIONBIOS And see the value of the BIOS version – this is your BIOS version.
With the program to view information about the motherboard
There are a lot of programs to find out the characteristics of the computer, including information about the motherboard, which interests us.
All these programs allow to find the version of BIOS, I will analyze the simplest example, free Speccy utility, which you can download from the manufacturer’s website (there you can also find the portable version, in the Builds section).
After downloading and running the program, you will see a window with the basic characteristics of the computer or laptop. Open the heading «Motherboard» (motherboard). In the window with information about the motherboard you will see the BIOS section, and in it – the version and the launch date, that is what we need.
We use the order line to find out the BIOS version
And the last method, which for some can be simpler than the two previous:
- Start the command line. This can be done by several methods: for example, press the Windows + R keys and introduce cmd (then press ok). In Windows 8.1 you can press the Windows + X keys and select the order line in the menu.
- Enter the command wmic bios get smbiosbiosversion And you will see information about the BIOS version.
I think the methods described are sufficient to find out the BIOS version – to update BIOS do everything carefully and read carefully the manufacturer’s instructions.
Conclusion
Updating the BIOS on a computer or laptop can offer important benefits, such as improved hardware compatibility, enhanced system stability, and unlocking new features like virtualization support. Before attempting an update, it is crucial to check the current BIOS version installed on your system and verify on the manufacturer’s website whether a newer version is available. This ensures that you are applying the correct update for your specific motherboard, whether it is an older model or a modern UEFI-based board.
While BIOS updates can solve problems—such as reducing excessive fan noise or enabling new functionalities—they are not without risks. An unsuccessful update can render a system unbootable, making it a delicate procedure that requires caution. Users should weigh the necessity of updating carefully: if the system is running well and there are no compelling reasons to update, it is often safer to leave the BIOS as it is.
In cases where an update is needed, preparation is key. Ensuring a stable power supply, following the manufacturer’s instructions precisely, and backing up important data can help mitigate potential risks. For those who are less experienced, consulting guides or seeking assistance can prevent mistakes that could compromise the system.
In conclusion, updating the BIOS is a powerful tool that can enhance performance, resolve specific issues, and unlock new features. However, it should be approached with caution, and only when necessary. By verifying the current version, understanding the benefits and risks, and following proper procedures, users can safely improve their computer’s capabilities while avoiding potential problems. Careful consideration and preparation are essential to make BIOS updates a valuable and safe process.
